Summer kick-off in Ticino

Der Sommer 2021 begann für mich vor einigen Tagen mit einem Trip in die schweizer Sonnenstube, genauer gesagt in den Kanton Tessin, auch bekannt unter dem italienischen Namen „Ticino“.

Ganz im Süden der Schweiz gelegen, angrenzend an Italien bietet das Tessin nicht nur südländisches Flair und ein Hauch von „La Dolce Vita“ mit tollem Wetter, meterhohen Palmen und natürlich grandiosem Essen, sondern auch atemberaubende Landschaften und kristallklare Bergseen.

Unsere Reise führte uns an den Lago Maggiore, welcher teils noch in der Schweiz, größtenteils aber in Italien liegt. Doch vor Ort merkt man schnell, dass die Landesgrenze hier nur eine rein geographische Angelegenheit ist, denn gerade am Lago Maggiore scheint das Leben, die Kultur und vor allem auch die Sprache nahtlos miteinander zu verschmelzen.

Summer of 2021 officially began for me a few days ago with a trip to the Swiss sunshine state, more precisely to the canton of Ticino.

Located in the very south of Switzerland, bordering Italy, Ticino offers not only southern flair and a touch of "La Dolce Vita" with great weather, meter-high palm trees and of course amazing food, but also breathtaking landscapes and crystal clear mountain lakes.

Our trip took us to Lake Maggiore, which is partly still in Switzerland, but mostly in Italy. But on the spot you quickly realize that the border here is only a purely geographical matter, because especially at Lake Maggiore life, culture and especially the language seem to merge seamlessly.

Die Anreise in die italienische Schweiz stellte sich als sehr angenehm und kurzweilig heraus. Von Süddeutschland bot sich die Anreise mit dem Auto an, so waren wir auch vor Ort etwas flexibel und mobiler unterwegs. Ebenfalls sehr komfortabel ist auch die Anreise mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln. Das Schweizer Bahnnetz ist optimal ausgebaut und die Zugfahrt durch die Schweizer Alpen, meist mit einer kurzen Umsteigeverbindung in Zürich, bietet mit den vielen Panoramaausblicken einen tollen ersten Eindruck in die kleine, aber vielseitige Schweiz.

Für weitere Anreisen lohnt sich dann jedoch ein Flug nach Zürich und eine anschließende Zugfahrt in Richtung Locarno oder Lugano.

Vor Ort bietet sich ein "Ticino Ticket" an, mit welchem Touristen alle öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel im Tessin nutzen können und so sorgenfrei mit Zug, Bus und Bahn den gesamten Kanton erkunden können.

The journey to the Italian speaking part of Switzerland turned out to be very pleasant and enjoyable. From southern Germany a road trip by car seemed to be most comfortable, so we were also on the spot a little flexible and more mobile on the road.

The journey by public transport is also very convenient as the Swiss rail network is optimally developed and the train ride through the Swiss Alps, usually with a short connection in Zurich, offers with the many panoramic views a great first impression of small but diverse Switzerland.

For longer journeys, a flight to Zurich and a following train ride to Locarno or Lugano is the most efficient way to get to Ticino.

On site, a "Ticino Ticket" is worthwhile, with which tourists can use all public transport in Ticino and thus explore the entire canton by train, bus and train without any worries.

Der Lago Maggiore ist den meisten wahrscheinlich bekannt für die vielen, guten Campingplätze, die sich um den ganzen See ziehen, die flachabfallenden Kieselstrände oder auch das kristallklare Wasser, welches bei den sommerlichen Temperaturen die perfekte Abkühlung ist. Doch auch für Nicht-Camper ist der See ein spannendes Reiseziel.

Die meiste Zeit unseres 4-tägigen Trips verbrachten wir in und um Locarno, einer mittelgroßen Hafenstadt auf der Schweizer Seite des Sees, welche mich durch die bebauten Hügel und die direkte Lage am Wasser an ein kleines Monaco am Lago Maggiore erinnert.

Lake Maggiore is probably known to most of you for the many good campsites around the lake, the shallow pebble beaches or the crystal clear water, which offers the perfect cooling on hot summer days. But the lake is also an exciting destination for non-campers.

We spent most of our 4-day trip in and around Locarno, a port town on the Swiss side of the lake, which reminds me of a small Monaco on Lake Maggiore because of its step-like construction on the hills and its direct location on the water.

Hier wohnten wir im Hotel Belvedere****s, welches uns mit toller Seesicht, leckerem Essen und großem Spa- und Poolbereich verwöhnte. Vom Hotel erreicht man das Stadtzentrum und den Hafen in nur wenigen Minuten, ideal also um von hier aus die Altstadt und die Gegend zu Fuß oder auch mit dem Schiff zu erkunden. Direkt neben dem Hotel befindet sich die eigene Bergbahn-Station, mit welcher man auch gemütlich den angrenzenden Berg hinauffahren kann, um einen der vielen tollen Aussichtspunkte genießen zu können.

Wer die Berge rund um den Lago Maggiore eher zu Fuß erklimmen will, kann das auf einem der vielen Wanderwege, die sich rund um den ganzen See schlängeln tun. Wir haben uns an den Teilabschnitt des „Lehrpfades zwischen Berge und See“ gewagt und wurden auf der circa 2 Stündigen Wanderung von Gera nach Vira mit tollen Ausblicken, Wasserfällen, Schluchten und herrlicher Natur belohnt.

Here we stayed at Hotel Belvedere****s, which spoiled us with great lake views, delicious food and large spa and pool area. From the hotel you can reach the city center and the harbor in just a few minutes, so ideal to explore the old town and the area by foot or by boat. Right next to the hotel is its own mountain railroad station, with which you can easily drive up the nearby mountain to enjoy one of the many great viewpoints.

If you prefer to climb the mountains around Lake Maggiore by foot, you can do so on one of the many hiking trails that wind around the entire lake. We ventured on the section of the "nature trail between mountains and lake" and were rewarded with great views, waterfalls, gorges and beautiful nature on the approximately 2-hour hike from Gera to Vira.

Unser eigentliches Tagesziel war jedoch der Shaka Beach in Vira, ein wahrer Insidertipp und "Must-See" für alle, die auf karibische Vibes und den Surferlifestyle stehen. Hier gibt es nicht nur die coolste Beach Bar der Schweiz mit original karibischen Feeling, Reggae Musik und exotischen Cocktails, sondern auch eine der wohl bekanntesten Attraktionen im Kanton Tessin, die #SwingTheWorld Riesenschaukel mitten im Lago.

Our actual destination for the day, however, was Shaka Beach in Vira, a true insider tip and must-see for all those who love Caribbean vibes and the surfer lifestyle. Here you can find not only the coolest beach bar in Switzerland with original Caribbean feeling, reggae music and exotic cocktails, but also one of the most famous attractions in the canton of Ticino, the #SwingTheWorld giant swing in the middle of the lake.

Die Idee zu den Riesenschaukeln von #SwingTheWorld, einer recht neuen aber inzwischen international bekannten Attraktion, stammt vom Powercouple Elisa und Fabio. Während dem Lockdown im vergangenen Jahr sind die beiden auf die Idee gekommen eine riesige Schaukel zu bauen und diese an einem öffentlichen Platz den Touristen zur Verfügung zu stellen. Die Idee schlug ein wie eine Bombe und ist inzwischen die Attraktion schlechthin im Tessin. Innerhalb weniger Tage besuchten knapp 1000 Touristen die erste Schaukel und machten diese über Nacht zum Internet-Star. Heute, circa eineinhalb Jahre nach dem Bau der ersten Schaukel gibt es bereits 13 weitere Schaukeln, welche in der ganzen Schweiz verteilt sind und machen besondere Orte noch spezieller. Die Schaukeln sind meist dort platziert, wo man keine Riesenschaukel erwarten würde, wie auf dem Berggipfel des Monte Generoso, unterhalb des Wasserfalls Cascata Di Foroglio oder auf den Hügeln von Morcote mit spektakulärer Aussicht auf Italien. Eine der speziellsten Schaukeln ist wohl auch jene am Shaka Beach, welche mitten im Wasser steht und so für noch mehr Badespaß am Lago Maggiore sorgt.

The idea for the giant swings of #SwingTheWorld, a rather new but already internationally known attraction, came from the power couple Elisa and Fabio. During last year's Lockdown, the two came up with the idea of building a giant swing and making it available to tourists in a public place. The idea hit like a bomb and is now the attraction par excellence in Ticino. Within a few days, almost 1000 tourists visited the first swing and made it an Internet star overnight. Today, about one and a half years after the first swing was built, there are already 13 more swings spread all over Switzerland, making special places even more special. The swings are mostly placed where you wouldn't expect a giant swing, like on the mountain top of Monte Generoso, below the Cascata Di Foroglio waterfall or on the hills of Morcote with spectacular views of Italy. One of the most special swings is probably also the one at Shaka Beach, which stands in the middle of the water and thus provides even more fun at Lake Maggiore.

Neben Locarno gehört auch das kleine ehemalige Fischerdorf Ascona zu den schönsten Orten am Lago Maggiore. Die bunten Häuser und die lebendige Promenade, welche reich an kleinen Cafes und Restaurants ist, besticht mit besonderem Charme und lässt absolutes Urlaubsfeeling aufkommen. In Ascona kann man sich einfach mal treiben lassen und durch die kleinen Gassen der historischen Altstadt Borgo schlendern, kleine Läden entdecken oder einfach mal die Sonne und die Aussicht auf den türkis glitzernden See mit einem Glas Aperol Spritz genießen.

Kein Wunder, dass man auch hier auf eine Riesenschaukel von #SwingTheWorld trifft. Am Rande der beliebten Promenade kann man hier im Schatten des Baumes ein kleines Päuschen oder sogar ein Picknick einlegen und sich abends ganz gemütlich in den Sonnenuntergang schaukeln.

Besides Locarno, the small former fishing village of Ascona is one of the most beautiful villages at Lake Maggiore. The colorful houses and the lively boulevard, which is rich of little cafes and restaurants, impresses with a special charm and creates an absolute vacation feeling. In Ascona you can just let yourself drift and stroll through the small streets of the historic old town Borgo, discover small stores or just enjoy the sun and the view of the turquoise glittering lake with a glass of Aperol Spritz.

No wonder you come across a giant swing from #SwingTheWorld here, too. At the end of the popular boulevard, you can take a break or even a picnic in the shade of the tree and swing comfortably into the sunset in the evening.

Für unsere letzte Nacht im Tessin zog es uns in eine ganz besondere Unterkunft an das nördliche Ufer des Lago Maggiore, ins Camper Städtchen Tenero. Hier befindet sich auf dem 5 Sterne Tamaro Camping Resort der „Tamaro Night Sky“, ein Glas-Cube, in welchem man unter (fast) freiem Himmel nächtigen und beim Einschlafen die Sterne über dem Tessin zählen kann.

Ausgestattet mit bequemen Betten, einer Klimaanlage, einer großen Holzveranda und natürlich einem Sichtschutz für etwas Privatsphäre, bietet das gläserne Tinyhome genug Platz für 4 Personen. Das Glasdach schützte uns vor dem nächtlichen Regen, welcher der Stimmung jedoch keinen Abbruch tat. Kurz darauf klarte der Himmel wieder auf und es bot sich uns tatsächlich eine Nacht "under a million stars", ein einmaliges Erlebnis welches sicher in Erinnerung bleibt.

For our last night in Ticino, we moved to a very special accommodation on the northern shore of Lake Maggiore, in the camper village of Tenero. Here, on the 5-star Tamaro Camping Resort, you will find the " Tamaro Night Sky ", a glass cube in which you can spend the night under (almost) the open sky and count the stars over the Ticino while falling asleep.

Equipped with comfortable beds, air conditioning, a large wooden veranda and of course a screen for some privacy, the Tinyhome offers enough space for 4 people. The glass roof protected us from the nightly rain, which, however, did not harm the mood. Shortly thereafter, the sky cleared up again and we were actually offered a night under a million stars, a unique experience which will certainly remain in memory.

Neben dem „Tamaro Night Sky“ findet man im Tessin noch weitere Million Stars Hotels, welche eine unvergessliche Nacht unter meist freiem Himmel bieten.

Im B&B Vallombrosa übernachten die Gäste in einer gläsernen Kuppel, welche das Million Stars Erlebnis auch bei schlechtem Wetter ermöglicht, wohin man hingegen in der „Stars Suite Alpe Nimi“ tatsächlich auf einem Hochbett auf einem alten Kastanienbaum in freier Natur übernachtet.

Wer also seinen Trip ins Tessin zu einer garantiert unvergesslichen Reise machen möchte, sollte definitiv eine Nacht in einem Million Stars Hotel einplanen - ein wahrer #TicinoMoment.

Nach nur vier Tagen im Tessin traten wir wieder die Heimreise an, hätten uns jedoch keinen besseren Auftakt in den Sommer 2021 wünschen können. Es war definitiv nicht unser letztes Mal im schönen Tessin.

At the B&B Vallombrosa, guests spend the night in a glass dome, which makes the Million Stars experience possible even in bad weather, whereas at the "Stars Suite Alpe Nimi", guests actually spend the night on a loft bed on an old chestnut tree in the open air.

After just four days in Ticino, we headed back home, but couldn't have asked for a better start to summer 2021. It was definitely not our last time in beautiful Ticino.
